AI Will Make Us More Human, Not Less

Every wave of technology triggers the same fear: this is the one that finally makes us obsolete. The printing press would kill memory. The calculator would kill mathematical thinking. The internet would kill deep thought. AI, we're told, will kill creativity itself.

It won't. And I think we'll look back at this moment as the point where human creativity was finally unleashed, not replaced.

We Were Never Doing Our Best Work

Here's the uncomfortable truth about most knowledge work: the majority of it isn't creative. It's formatting. It's synthesizing information that already exists. It's translating ideas from one medium to another. It's sitting in meetings to align on things that could have been a document. It's writing the document that could have been a decision.

We called this work "thinking" because it happened at a desk, in front of a screen, using our brains. But most of it was processing, not creating. And we were exhausted by it. By the time the processing was done, we had nothing left for the work that actually required us to be human.

AI doesn't replace the creative part. It replaces the processing part. And that changes everything.

The Creative Surplus

When I build products with Claude Code, something interesting happens. The parts of the work that used to drain me, the boilerplate, the configuration, the repetitive patterns, those disappear. What's left is the part I actually care about: the architecture decisions, the user experience choices, the "what if we tried this?" moments.

I'm not doing less thinking. I'm doing more. Better thinking. The kind that only happens when you're not mentally exhausted from the mechanical work that preceded it.

This is the creative surplus that AI generates. Not by being creative for us, but by clearing the runway so we can actually take off.

Creativity Is a Human Problem

LLMs are extraordinary pattern engines. They can synthesize, remix, and extrapolate from everything they've been trained on. But they don't have taste. They don't have conviction. They don't wake up at 2am with an idea that won't let them sleep.

The things that make a product great, the bold bet that sees what the data can't show you yet, the design choice that feels right before you can articulate why, the conviction to invest in a new direction when the safe path is still delivering, those are irreducibly human acts. They require judgment, intuition, and courage.

What AI does is remove the excuse. You can no longer say "I didn't have time to think strategically" or "I was too busy with execution to explore that idea." The execution layer is being compressed. What's left is you.

The New Literacy Is Taste

In a world where anyone can generate code, content, designs, and analysis with a prompt, the differentiator is no longer technical skill. It's knowing what to build. It's knowing when something is good. It's having a point of view.

Taste, judgment, and vision become the scarce resources. These are deeply human qualities. They come from lived experience, from understanding people, from caring about craft for reasons that can't be reduced to a metric.

The product leaders who thrive in this era won't be the ones who are best at prompting AI. They'll be the ones who know what to do with the creative space AI opens up.

More Human, Not Less

I think the real story of AI isn't about efficiency or automation or replacing jobs. It's about what happens when millions of people suddenly have the capacity to act on ideas they never had time to pursue.

The tax analyst who automates their manual workflows and discovers they're actually a product builder. The designer who stops pushing pixels and starts shaping experiences. The engineer who stops writing CRUD endpoints and starts solving problems that matter.

That's not a less human future. That's a more human one. AI handles what machines should have been doing all along. And we get to do what only we can do: create, connect, imagine, and build things that matter.

The tools have never been more powerful. The question is whether we'll use them to do more of the same, or to finally do the work we were meant to.
